The beauty of the Kashmiri weddings can be known by the fact that they are happened in the beautiful valleys of Kashmir. The bride and the groom are dressed in beautiful Kashmiri outfits and ornaments. The beauty of Kashmir makes the marriages look even more beautiful.‘Manzimyor’ is the Kashmiri word for a professional matchmaker. Families of the bride and the groom hire a matchmaker in order to get a profile of the girl/guy. The profiles are then matched. After the matchmaker makes a profile of the bride or the groom, he then present their details in front of the family . He leaves the details of the guy/girl at the interested family’s house giving them time to decide whether to take it forward or not.This process is called ‘Parché traavun’. The interested family then enquires about the whole matter on a personal level.Then the bride and the groom's profiles are matched . The families approve it . After the approval of both the bride and the groom, the family of the groom gets the bride and her family gifts and jewellery. Later ‘majmas’ of sweets,dry fruit and confectionery is sent to all the relatives to announce the wedlock. Nishayn or engagement is a simple engagement. In this Nishayan Nikah is read to legalise the relationship .
In this engagement, kins and family of both men and women from the boy’s side come to the girl’s house. The girl side also invites close relatives, friends and neighbors. After this it becomes official.Then the families decide and finalize the dates for the wedding then a get together is there. ‘Saatnaam’ is a get together which is held at their respective places. It’s done to announce the wedding dates amongst close relatives and it is celebrated well with Kashmiri music and dance.The females of the family sit together and clean the rice to make it free from the impurities. This is done on traditional Kashmiri ‘shups’.The ‘Malmaenz’ is a Kashmiri word for Haldi. This is where the actual wedding feels begin. In this ritual, the elder women of the family oils the bride’s hair ,makes a braid of it and wraps them with colorful ribbons. Then it is further celebrated with Kashmiri music and dance. Then the marriage takes place. Kashmiri rituals and traditions are different from other marriages and culture and is indeed a beautiful one.
